FAQs
What is tag rugby?
Tag is a non-contact form of rugby played by mixed teams, containing male and female players. The non-contact form of "tagging" entails the defender removing a 'Tag' strip adhered by a velcro patch on the shorts (or belt) of the attacking player/s. The non-contact nature allows Men and Women of all ages to participate at a level suitable to their ability and experience, from Higher Grade through to Beginners.
Each team has six 'Tags' (removal of Tag strip from attacking player instead of a tackle) to score. If there is no score, possession is then handed over to the opposition team who will then in turn play a 'set-of-six' and so on.
Trys are scored the very same way as in regular rugby ie. touching down the ball with full control on or over the try line. Also as with regular rugby, the normal laws for a pass having to be behind or lateral all apply.

How many on a Tag team?
The recommended squad size for an Edmonton Tag rugby team is 15 players. During a game, each team must have no more than seven players on the field of play at any one time. Of the seven players on-field three must be female.
Do you have to be insured to play Edmonton Tag Rugby?
Yes. All forms of rugby in Canada require rugby Canada insurance. If you are currently playing in this regular 2014/15 rugby season and are registered with a club you are insured (same rule that applies to the Jasper 7s pre-season tournament). If you are new to rugby or didn't play this season you can pay the touch/flag rugby fee on the online registration system. This is a $35 fee which covers you for touch and tag rugby tournaments. The Edmonton Rugby Union has this payment system set up on their club online registration form. See Sign up/register page for more detailed registration process
“I started playing Tag rugby in the summer (off season) in Ireland back in 2002. The concept was slightly different however the core fundamentals of rugby where the premise of the game. It can be as social or as competitive as you want to make it and it definitely improves your team defensive skills which is funny being that it is a completely non-contact game.“ Testimonial Oey Curran
Why $1000 a team?
The main cost of this sport is the 2 hour facility rental. We want to give those players interested the best conditions possible with the most realistic rugby indoor surface in the City. With a 13 week season this gives us the opportunity to give you value for your money with a league season followed by an appropriate playoff system based on the number of teams we start with this year. The other costs are for the equipment ordered from the UK - adult Tag belts and Tag sets and the potential for paying the refs a small honorarium.
How long will the games be?
We have a two hour time slot. The field house will be made into 2 pitches. Depending on how many teams register before the deadline will determine the length of the games. This will be confirmed in early September and we appreciate your patience as we work this out.
